Land consolidation

As the population of the Netherlands increased, the small-scale re-allocation of agricultural land holdings of earlier times developed into multifunctional land consolidation programmes. Rural planning has moved with the times. For thirty years we have been improving conditions not only for agriculture, but also for nature, landscape and recreation. The reallocation of land is often equally essential for these functions, for example, to extend and join nature reserves; to free up space for new forest and woodland and for cycle tracks, footpaths and bridleways.

International

At the request of foreign governments or Dutch ministries, DLG also operates in other countries providing advice on problems in rural areas. Projects have been or are being carried out in various countries and on different continents (for example in Hungary, China and Honduras), to experiment with the concept of the land consolidation committee. Projects of this type serve as an example of open and transparent government which sets store by public participation in planning and implementation. There are also various foreign projects which are more in the nature of a learning-by-doing exercise, to build up experience with multi-sectoral and interdisciplinary approaches in planning preparation and implementation.
